blog moving
sorry for my absence! i was intending to write more to my blog, but glitch has shut down today, so i had to move it elsewhere.
i packed my things from what was left of the provider and moved my old site. i was going to put it into neocities, but i ultimately decided to make it private.
with glitch being gone, now i only have my neocities site. i'm going to be completely honest right now: i was looking to abandon the old site at some point. the original provider shutting down and stopping service just sped up the process by a long shot. i'm proud of my neocities site, because i made it from beginning to end with just a layout tutorial and an interest in an aesthetic. of course, i still have fondness for my old site. from its spinning cds with a list of albums i like to the blog where i detailed my website updates and journey through html and css.
i still find new and fun websites every day, those that manage to amaze me. the wonder from finding people and discussions never fail to reignite the passion and wonder that i had from the beginning. i do get burnt out sometimes, but then i remember why i do this and keep going. i don't do it for other people, not really, but for myself and to show my own passions. my current website is quite empty right now, but that'll change. one thing i don't want is the overcrowding of my navigation, which is what made me cautious of what to put.
the neocities site has been updated a bit, as i changed the cursor to a wii pointer (suggestion thanks to people i know), edited my robots.txt to prevent scraping, made the pointer to be a bit interactive. you know, things to make me get back into the groove of things. it's been a while since i've actually moved back into the small web. i was inactive due to personal matters at hand, like academics!
i was originally going to make a blog post containing all of these updates back in june, but i heard the announcement that glitch was shutting down so i stopped updating that blog and immediately ceased all operations of my old site and everything pre-neocities. while it sucks, i suppose it means the start of a new era. an era where i actually understand css, for one. i contemplated whether to move my old content to the new blog or not, where to host my new blog, things like that!
there were some problems with choosing which static site generator and blogging resource to use for this, but ultimately decided on strawberry starter. i had some technical issues, but i do think it's because of my computer automatically linking certain folders to an application i removed long ago. you know, computer issues.
this year, one of my goals has been to find open source alternatives to all of the leading applications. so far, i think i've done a fine job of finding and using them. like libreoffice, betterbird, librewolf, things like that. overall, life's been good! one thing i've been itching to do for a good while is self-hosting.
a while back, i took some cloud computing and networking classes and it made me even more fascinated by the idea of creating one's own infrastructure and hosting one's own programs, resources, etc. i see lots of people on this side of the internet do the same, for some self-host their own websites and others self-host, say, their own mail and calendars.
i might be busy, i might not be busy. it depends on where life takes me, but i will make an effort to participate in the communities i find myself proud to be in!
